Glossary

APR
Annual Percentage Rate. The yearly interest cost if a balance is carried. Variable APRs move with the Prime Rate.
Annual fee
Flat yearly charge for card membership. Net cost = fee minus value of credits and earned rewards.
Sign-up bonus / SUB
Points or cash awarded for meeting a minimum spend requirement within a set period (typically 3–6 months).
Foreign transaction fee
Surcharge (usually 2–3%) on purchases made in foreign currencies or processed through foreign banks.
Transfer partners
Airlines and hotels to which flexible points (UR, MR, TYP) can be moved, often at 1:1 ratio.
Minimum payment
Smallest amount due to avoid a late fee, typically 1–2% of balance or $25. Paying only the minimum maximizes interest paid.
5/24 rule
Chase internal policy: application denied if 5 or more new credit accounts opened in past 24 months across all issuers.
Credit utilization
Ratio of current balance to credit limit. Below 30% is the common heuristic; below 10% is optimal for score.
Charge card
Card with no preset spending limit that requires full balance payment each month. Amex Platinum and Gold are charge cards.
Grace period
Time between statement close and due date (usually 21–25 days) during which no interest accrues if paid in full.
